Harichavank monastery

Harichavank monastery is one of the most magnificent monasteries in Armenia, steeped in the history of the area and favored of princes and pretenders, progenitors of Armenia’s patriarchs during the medieval period. It is certainly well preserved. The monastery was renovated and used by the Catholicos as a summer residence in the 19th c.

History
The main church of this walled monastery complex was sponsored in 1201 by the brothers Zakhar and Ivan Zakharid, whose portraits are displayed on the church’s eastern wall. On the western side of the church is a large four-column gavit (built before 1224) with an exquisite stalactite floor and vaulted ceilings laden with mosaic designs.

The monastery fell into disrepair in the late 13th- 14th centuries during the invasions of the Mongols, Timur and the Ottoman Seljuks, and revived again in 1850, when the site became the summer residence of the Katolikos, who renovated and added numerous 19th century buildings to the complex. One of these buildings houses a small museum.
