Gegharkunik region is the largest region of Armenia, bordering Azerbaijan and the Shahumyan Region of de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. It is the largest province in Armenia with an area of 5,348 km². Approximately 1,278km² of its territory is covered by Lake Sevan which is the largest lake in Transcaucasia.
The region Gegharkunik is surrounded by mountains Geghama, Vardenis, Aregunu, East Sevan, Sevan and Pambak. The climate of Gegharkunik marz is cold and snowy in winters, while summers are characterized with warm and humid climate.
Yerevan-Sevan-Dilijan highway of republican importance runs through the territory of the region. 

Economy
Due to Lake Sevan, Gegharkunik region has always been the main supplier of fresh fish and the biggest source of fresh water. It plays a great role not only in ecology, but in the economy of the country as well. Recently, beekeeping has significantly developed in the province as well.
The Sotk gold mine near Vardenis has one of the largest gold deposits in Armenia. Thus, mining of gold, as well as dolomite, basalt, sand and volcanic tuff is also popular.

Population
The province Gegharkunik is almost entirely populated by ethnic Armenians who belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church. There are Russian Molokans in villages like Chkalovka and Semyonovka as well.

The summer presidential residence of the Republic of Armenia is located at the Sevan Peninsula.

Fortresses and archaeological sites:

• Mount Azhdahak Petroglyphs: A great number of prehistoric petroglyphs have been found in the surroundings of Mount Azhdahak. Most images depict men in scenes of hunting and fighting, as well as astronomical bodies and phenomena: the Sun, the Moon, constellations, the stellar sky, lightning, and many others.
• Lchashen Cyclopean Fortress: the site is home to an ancient settlement, a burial place and a cyclopean fortress dating back to the 4th millennium-7th century BC.
• Teyseba archaeological site of the Urartian period, 8th century BC
• Odzaberd fortress, 8th century BC
• Noratus cemetery of the 10th century

• Sevanavank monastic complex of the 9th century
• Hayravank Monastery of the 9th century
• Makenyats Vank monastic complex of the 9th century
• Kotavank monastery of the Holy Mother of God, 9th century
