Stepanavan city is situated in the northern part of Armenia, on the Yerevan-Tbilisi highway. The climate is mild, cool, the summer is crude, the winter is moderately cold as there are many forests, large reserves of natural materials in this area. 

History
In medieval times, Stepanavan was the manor of Zakarian dynasty. It also served  as  a  summer residence  for  Armenian  kings, Lori Berd being a favorite Summer home  for  the  Armenian  King Ashot Yerkat (the Iron).
The town was one of the districts of Lori Fortress, chronicles showing that by the end of 13th Century, a branch of the Prince Artsakh Khachenitc Hassan Jalalal Dola and 110 families inhabited the town plateau.  The  residential area was named Jalaloghli, after the Jalal  Dynasty, when it  was officially founded in 1604 by  Armenian refugees, running  from  the  Persian  sovereign  Shah  Abass during  his  Armenian  campaign. It held its name for 700 years until 1923. Afterwards the city was renamed Stepanavan, meaning town of Stepan in Armenian, in honor of the bolshevik leader Stepan Shaumian.

Earthquake of 1988 
The 1988 earthquake caused significant damage to the town Stepanavan, and new housing has been slow but ongoing. Development is on the left bank of the Dzoraget River connecting the new districts with the town over a bridge at a height of 200 m from the river floor.

Tourist Attractions
Stepanavan city is rich in historical and architectural monuments. It has 5-6 centuries churches. Lori fortress is the residence and tombs BC 2nd millennium. A few kilometers away from Stepanavan is the Botanical Garden (where 500 types of trees can be found) and "Sochut" children's sanatorium. 

Economy
Stepanavan is rich in mineral water springs, as well as therapeutic peat resources, etc. 
There are also mines: Armanis gold mine and the gold mines of Koghes village.
The economy is specialized in small and medium business. The population is engaged in diversified agriculture: plant growing, vegetable growing, grain, fodder crops, cattle breeding, aviculture /poultry keeping.
