Byurakan Observatory

The observatory boasts 5 main telescopes, among them are ZTA-2.6 which is the largest in the region and 1m Schmidt telescopes, unique in the world.

Byurakan observatory is a world famous scientific institution and an important knowledge transfer center. It annually hosts a large number of specialists with public lectures and observations (a special telescope has been designed for the purpose) organized for them.

Location:
Byurakan Observatory was founded in 1946 and is located near the village of Byurakan which lies about 35 km from Yerevan. It is included in the state list of historical-cultural monuments of Aragatsotn region as a complex of state significance.
Byurakan Observatory is well-known for its new approaches. Contrary to the commonly accepted views, it has proved the existence of young stars due to the continuous star-formation processes. It has also proved that galactic nuclei have extremely high activity which may generate massive outflows.
The observations at Byurakan have also revealed that bursts are characteristic of young stellar objects causing release of excessive inner energy.

List of discoveries
The observatory has discovered a large number of celestial objects (special star clusters, flare stars, nebulae, active galaxies, galaxy clusters, etc.) which later became a subject for international observations. As for galaxies discovered by Markarian (known as Markarian galaxies), they are in the focus of worldwide studies.

In 1998 the observatory was named after its founder Victor Ambartsumian. In 2014 Armenian government decreed that Byurakan Observatory be included in the list of national values.
