Ijevan city is on both banks of Aghstev river and on the foot of Ijevan ridge. The climate is mild, the summer is cool and the winter is not cold. It is the administrative, industrial, education and cultural center and transport junction of the whole north-eastern part. 
The name means “Inn”, befitting its historic place as a stop on caravan roads between Central Asia and the Near East. This is the reason that the city formerly called Karvansara. Now the administrative center for Tavush Marz, Ijevan has been from time immemorial a gateway to Armenia, the first major stop on the road from the Caspian and the Kura river valley.  While more important villages and monasteries lie to the east, Ijevan grew to be the historic capital of the area. Judging by the large number of archeological excavations in the area, the city has been serving as a gateway for many thousands of years. 

Tourist Attraction
Ijevan city is rich in cultural and historical monuments - Makaravank monastery (12.-13. cc), St. Astvatsatsin and St. Hovhannes churches (7.-9. cc.), many other temples, castles, etc.

Economy
Ijevan city is also known by carpet making. The largest carpet factory of South Caucasus is in Ijevan city.
The main trend of town industry is manufacturing - woodworking, production of food, mineral water and wine.
The first major plan of the town was adopted in 1948, revised later in 1967. In 1951, the Ijevan Wine-Brandy Factory was opened, followed by the rug and carpet factory in opened in 1959-65. With the gradual development of the industrial sector, Ijevan was given the status of a town in 1961. In 1970, it was turned into a city of republican sub-ordination of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The population is engaged in agriculture, cattle-breeding and mastery.
