Fortress Kayan Berd

Perched on a hill halfway between the Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries, the Kayan Berd fort was built using black tufa in 1233 by order of Hovhannes Zakarian, bishop of Haghpat and nephew to Zakareh and Ivaneh Zakarian, founders of the Zakarian dynasty in Lori. It was distroyed during Mongolian incursions into the area, just before their capture of Lori Berd and wholesale destruction of the region in 1238.
